Best Spirituality Book for Depression: The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav
Zukav is a well-regarded New Thought writer with accolades outside spiritual circles, too. He has a careful, scholarly style that belies his out-of-the-box ideas.
The Seat of the Soul is an in-depth analysis of the part of the human being we call soul.
Can this book help me overcome depression?
Probably not much.
Depression effectiveness rating: 2.5 on a scale of 1-10
What’s it about?
Here are my notes from the book.
Part One: Introduction
There are five-sensory people and there are multisensory people. The truly evolved human is multisensory and enjoys authentic, not human-based, power. She finds the many currents inside of herself and knows how to either refuse or encourage those currents.
Your personality is not your soul. It is merely the shell of self that you chose in order to learn the unique lessons it can teach.
On karma: It is not a punishment. Karma is what occurs whenever you do something that is against your soul’s higher purpose. A memory is created and you must go through a similar experience later until you learn what you need to learn from it.
There’s no need to judge another’s karma. Everyone has some “bad” karma or we wouldn’t be in this soul school we call life.
Part Two: Creation
The multisensory person can draw on guide teachers from other realms to help her. This guidance comes in many forms, including insights, hunches, conversations, etc.
Every soul sends out signals/energies that are either positive or negative. These energies directly affect other peoples’ energies/perceptions. Example: When you forgive someone you never see again on earth, they feel it and respond to you accordingly, either consciously (say, by having a happy thought about you) or subconsciously (by feeling differently about you).
Every thought you have affects others.
When you first have an intention, like the intention to find a new job, your soul will begin to attract the object of your intention to you.
Just as each person is their own energy system, each other entity is as well. Example: cats have a collective energy system, as do cities and any other word encompassing a group of souls. Each of these energy systems is “a fluid mass consciousness in which each of [the members] exists interdependently with each other.” In other words: we are all one.
Your unconscious intentions are sometimes stronger than your conscious ones, and so override them. Example: you desire love consciously but you unconsciously want to keep people at a distance so you end up without love.
“You create in each moment.”
“. . . When you choose to align yourself with your soul instead of with your personality, you create a reality that reflects your soul rather than your personality.”
Zukav gives an explanation of quantum physics, and the effort to understand the nature of physical light. “Since light is physical, five-sensory counterpart to quantum physics may also be a way trying to understand the soul.”
Light can be seen, measured and studied using two devices. One device reveals light as particles. It is the only “thing” is both at the same time. However, light can’t be seen or described or studied both at the same time—its one reality is incompatible with its other reality. Therefore, the experimenter/ observer chooses which reality to view it in and in this way creates through intent.
The takeaway: Our souls, too, are light, and we constantly choose through our intentions the way in which that light is revealed to others.
Part Three: Responsibility
“Responsible choice” is choosing to be aware of the nonphysical , soul-realm consequences of your actions, rather than ignoring the consequences.
Temptation is simply a way for you to get out of your karmic obligations without giving into negative actions. When you resist temptation, your (bad) karma is lessened.
The key to overcoming addiction: Know that you are strong enough. “You will not be as tempted or as frightened as you think.” Nonphysical souls will assist you.
If you choose to give into temptation, don’t have shame. You will eventually overcome it, if not in this lifetime, then in another.
“If you wish the world to become loving and compassionate, become loving and compassionate yourself.” You affect the world by being who you are.
“Lucifer” means “Bringer of Light”. Temptation brings your weakness to light.
“When you leave your physical form, you will join the nonphysical level of reality that is appropriate to your vibrational frequency at the time that you leave your reincarnation.”
On the soul: After the soul becomes whole/enlightened, it enters a higher plane and becomes what we might call an “angel.” After this it no longer incarnates. Some souls don’t want to leave earth. These are called “ghosts.”
There are numerous realms of nonphysical life. “Beyond the Angelic realm are realms upon realms of intelligence we would think of as God.”
A soul is created from the larger divine intelligence/God that has always existed. “Because you are a part of all that is, you have literally always been, yet there was an instant when what is you was formed.”
“As that little form grows in power, in selfhood, in its own consciousness of self, it becomes larger and more Godlike. Then it becomes God.”
Part Four: Power
Fear or pain is felt in the chest, physically. That is because your power is leaving through your heart center.
It’s important to pray because then you have a partnership with the Divine. It also calms you.
- “Trust allows the experience of bliss.” You have to trust that your prayer are being answered, always, and that God’s will is being done exactly as should. This is how you can experience bliss.
- “Reach for your soul. Reach even farther. The impulse of creation . . . the . . . point between energy and matter: that is the seat of the soul.”
