Best Spirituality Book for Depression: Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation: A 28-Day Program by Sharon Salzberg

Real Happiness is an overview of the benefits of meditation. It also describes a 28-day meditation program for beginners.

One of the main benefits of this practice: It gives you a calmness that is always under the surface, even during life storms.

Can this book help me overcome depression?

It likely can. But since I haven’t tried it personally, I can’t vouch for her specific meditation method.

Does it address depression specifically? What does it say that can help?

Yes; the book is called Real Happiness, after all.

A few tips from the book I particularly liked:

  • Performers can use a lovingkindness meditation before going onstage. Focusing on others makes us much less nervous.
  • When you don’t feel like meditating, “. . . just put your body there.”

To what degree do you think this book can help me overcome depression?

Depression effectiveness rating: 4 on a scale of 1-10
