Life Hack for Getting Suddenly Awesome: Pray the Right Way

best-books-for-mystics-5

If you are pursuing the spiritual life as I have recently begun to do, you probably know that there are a million different ways to pray.

One is to meditate—to, essentially, clear your mind and enter into deep relaxation. A lot of people recommend it, and I’m sure for good reason.

But so far, I’ve found, I suck at it.

A better prayer method for me is to write down some of my feelings and thoughts—the ones that currently seem the strongest in my mind, whether positive or negative—then re-focus them, giving them a more spiritual perspective.

Christians call this “taking thoughts captive” after a verse in the book of I Corinthians, I believe.

And that’s pretty much what I do: I take my thoughts captive.

I ask myself, Is this really true?

And if it isn’t, I replace it with something that is.

But praying like this isn’t magical.

Well, maybe it is—but I haven’t proven it yet.

(When I do, though, I’ll let you know.)

If you do this without truly believing what you’re saying—going through the motions, so to speak—it won’t have the affect you want.

So pray the right way:

Pray the thoughts you really believe already, the good things you already know to be true.

Such as: God is with me. There is a reason this happened. I am fulfilling my life’s purpose every day.

The list goes on and on, and all the positive things you believe are fair game.

But don’t just say the words unthinkingly.

Focus.

Believe.

Repeat your prayer until it’s real.

  1. Hi Mollie,

I believe you are on a path that can, without some difinite guide markers, prove to skewer you either closer to God, or possibly toward an unknown god…

Prayer is absolutely vital. God of the Bible perscribes it as the antidote to eveything in your life. But he does have a specific and perscribed method for effective prayer. It is only discovered by actually reading and meditating on the Scriptures. This type of meditation is not the same as what is taught and expounded upon in unbiblical New Age circles. This is an area where people are taught to be still and “open” your minds. It is dangerous ground, because this is where all types of nonbiblical spiritual doorways begin to open, and lead its praticitioners further away from the holy God of the Bible.

The power of God is literally revealled in the written Word of God. It is also referred to as the ‘living’ Word. It is because it is not just a physical books of paper, it is the Inspired Word spoken by God to the writers and literally contains Spirit power to change your life. Because God himself is a Spirit and is perfectly Holy, this is the means by which he uses, with prayer, to communicate with His creation man.

If you are even just a curious seeker of God, and the kind of prayer that he can respond to, one of the easiest places to start is in the book of Proverbs. The truths that are exposed in these pages is a direct commentary on every persons life;….because you can see yourself in those passages…good and bad. God deals with our conscience there, and with prayer, offers a simple way to His Happy Home!

  2. Great post. I also find it helpful to question some of my thoughts and beliefs and to look for a perspective that resonates with my Inner Being/God/Source/Universal Intelligence (or whatever you want to call it)
